Oil on canvas. Featuring a Parisian alleyway. Signed Henri Manguin (French, 1874-1949). 17.1 x 13.2 inch (43.5 x 33.5 cm). Henri Charles Manguin was born in Paris in 1874 and died in Saint Tropez in 1949. He was a French painter associated with Fauve movement. Manguin studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Gustave Moreau alongside Matisse and Charles Camoin, who were to become close friends, and made many copies of the Renaissance art at the Louvre. His work was greatly influenced by impressionism, which is reflected in his frequent use of bright pastel colours. In 1899 he married and made a number of portraits of his wife Jeanne and their family. Manguin's first exhibition was in 1902 at the Salon des Independants and d'Automne. At the height of his career as a Fauve artist Manguin produced numerous paintings of Mediterranean landscapes. Manguin travelled extensively through Southern Europe with Albert Marquet. He left Paris to settle in Saint-Tropez in 1949 where he died soon after the same year. PROVENANCE: Southern Ontario estate
