Sharps Model 1874 sporting rifle in .40-70 straight, 30” octagon barrel, single trigger, open sights and oil finish stocks, 9 ½ pounds, original price $38, shipped December 11, 1876 to E.E. Eaton Gun and Sporting goods dealer inChicago, Illinois with factory letter confirming information. This rifle is accompanied by a hand written note signed Gertrude A. Alexander stating “this rifle was owned by Charlie Ellsbury (Her father) who started a freight company a betweenCody, Wyoming and Cooke City, Montana”. The current owner at that time was her grandson Donald A. Alexander. The note is not dated but we are appointed with this history and would place it more than 25 years ago. Gertrude Alexander was awell-known Cody, Wyoming local who ran a guesthouse in the German tradition and a note in German from that guesthouse is included. A handwritten note indicates Don Alexander was living in Cody in 1995 and stated his grandfatherstarted the drag (freight) company in about 1902. An interesting research folder on the history of this freighting company and Alexander is included. Also this rifle also was for many years retained and the Leon Wandler collection who was a noted
