Sharps Meachum Style Cartridge Sporting Rifle
This Sharps rifle is a Meacham type conversion to a metallic cartridge. It is almost, but not quite a New Model 1869 in that the serial number is approximately 500 numbers away from the C48000 serial range. The rifle is equipped with a medium weight 28 1/2" octagon barrel. The top barrel flat is marked with the boxed script "Old Reliable" and "SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT, CONN." markings, the left rear flat is marked "CAL 40 2 1/2", the left side of the receiver has a faint partial marking, the serial number is marked on the upper tang and the lock is marked "C. SHARPS' PAT / OCT 5TH 1852". Silver blade front sight, replacement fixed iron buckhorn rear side, adjustable double set triggers and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with an iron buttplate. The left side of the wrist has an iron plate where a saddle ring bar was once attached. The action has a filler plug where the other side of the bar would attach.

Good. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled brown and gray patina with a small area of minor pitting on the left rear barrel flat, some minor pitting on the lever, lower tang and heel and toe of the buttplate. There is a threaded hole on the top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight. With exception to some chipping around the left wrist plate, the wood is good with some minor scratches, dings and dents. Unless noted above the markings are clear. The action is fine.
