Sharps Cartridge Conversion Saddle Ring Carbine in 40-70 Caliber
This particular carbine is chambered in the rare 40-70 cartridge rather than the standard 50-70 caliber found on these carbines. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked "SHARPS 40-70 STRAIGHT", the left side of the receiver has the two line Sharps September, 1848 patent date and the lock the two line October, 1852 patent date. The serial number appears on the upper tang. The front sight has been moved back 1/4", the original slot filled and the blade is missing from the reset sight due to shortening the barrel. The rear sight is the standard folding leaf carbine sight graduated to 800 yards. Mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with saddle ring bar mounted on the left wrist (ring absent) and iron carbine buttplate.

Condition: Fair. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina with some evidence of cleaning on the shortened rifle barrel. The wood is fair with numerous minor gouges, dents and scratches. The buttplate is ill-fitting at the toe. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
