Scarce U.S. Model 1836 Flat Lock Waters Single Shot Percussion Pistol
Manufactured in the mid-1840s to 1849, this single shot percussion pistol was manufactured by A. H. Waters & Co., Milbury, Massachusetts and is as known as the "Flat Lock Waters". This pistol is believed to be the transition between the last flintlock (Model 1836) and first percussion pistol (Model 1842). The lock is marked with an eagle head over "Waters & CO / MILBURY MASS / 1849" and the top of the barrel opposite the bolster is marked "NWP / P". The distinguishing feature is the lock that is flat and flush fitting to the stock. At first glance the pistol appears to be a percussion converted Model 1836, but it was original manufactured as a percussion pistol, probably using leftover parts from earlier martial pistols. The "Flat Lock Waters" pistol was never officially adopted or issued by the U.S. Army. The barrel is fitted with a brass blade front sight and a drum style percussion bolster stamped with the letter "V" on the end. There is a letter "V" stamped on the front end of the trigger guard plate. The pistol was made without a rear sight. Brass two piece trigger guard, trigger and left side plate, with the remaining parts iron. The barrel band has an extension back to the side plate and the buttcap and backstrap are one piece extending to the barrel tang. The stock is marked with a small "WD" at the rear of the left side flat.
