This is a very fine example of a U.S. Model 1840 Hall "fishtail" carbine that was manufactured by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut, from 1840-43, with a total production of 6,001. This carbine features the distinctive "fishtail" operating lever mounted ahead of the trigger guard. The breechblock is marked: "US/S. NORTH/MIDLtn/CONN /1840" and the left side rear of the barrel is marked with the inspectors mark "NWP". Fixed sights, cleaning rod, and mounted with a smooth full straight grip stock with a flat iron buttplate, a script "WAT" cartouche on the right flat and a script "NWP" cartouche on the left flat. The Model 1840 Hall North Carbine was issued to the 1st and 2nd Dragoon regiments and saw service in the Seminole War and in the Mexican War. Examples of this important Dragoon carbine are difficult to find.

Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Very fine. The carbine retains 90% original brown lacquer showing some minor thinning with some flaking on the trigger guard. The breechblock retains 80% darkened original case colors. Stock has been repaired at the wrist, otherwise wood is fine with some minor handing marks and a few minor gouges, with a deep gouge on the forearm (right side). Mechanically excellent. This example appears unissued as inspection of the interior of the breechblock and muzzle show absolutely no signs of firing.
