Scarce Martially Inspected Remington  Split Breech  Type II Single Shot Breech Loading Carbine
Remington's first metallic cartridge longarm, originally sold to the government at the end of the Civil War, sold back in 1870, and then exported in large number to Europe to arm the French for the Franco-Prussian War. Blade front and two-leaf rear sights, with "REMINGTON'S. ILION. N.Y. / PAT. DEC. 23. 1863. MAY 3, & NOV. 16, 1864" on the upper tang, saddle ring on the left side of the receiver, and smooth straight grip stock with a single barrel band, sling swivels, a pair of cartouches at the wrist, "star/ M in a circle" and "SJC/ 3" on the right side of the buttstock and "U.S." on the buttplate heel.

Condition: Very good plus, with signs of a partial light cleaning. A smooth gray patina is visible overall, with a dark mottled patina on the front section of the barrel and traces of original blue in the protected areas. Original case colors are faintly visible on the left side of the frame, strongest in the area protected by the ring bar. Stock is fine with some dings and deep scratches.
