Manufactured by A.H. Waters Armory circa 1859 to early 1860s with a total quantity around 1,500 U.S. plus 3,000 Russian contract (writer believes this to be of the latter contract). It has the distinction of being the first bolt action rifle purchased by the U.S. government (900 were bought). This example is marked "GREENE'S PATENT / NOV. 17 1857." on the upper tang. Bayonet lug/blade front sight, stepped rear sight is graduated 5 through 11 on the folding leaf, three barrel bands, leather sling, trumpet ramrod and buttplate with trapdoor.
BBL: 36 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 52
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: NSN
Condition: Very good. The rifle retains streaks of original blue finish with the balance a mottled brown patina with some light spotting. The hammer has some flash pitting. The stock is also very good with some chipping along the ramrod channel, a hairline crack behind the middle band, and a series of dents behind the rear sling swivel, along with numerous minor dings, pressure dents, and scratches. Action needs work as the hammer and bolt springs are both broken.
