This First Type example of a U.S. Springfield Model 1795 is dated 1802 on the buttplate tang. The lock plate is marked "SPRINGFIELD" in a horizontal curve behind the hammer with the eagle/shield motif over "US" ahead of the hammer. Marked "US" on top of the barrel at the breech with "P eagle head" proofs on the left side. Trigger guard is the First Type with long pointed finials top and bottom. Hammer is the First Type with flat face, beveled edge and curled at top of spur. Smooth straight grip stock with 3 barrel bands, button head ramrod, sling swivels, and flat buttplate. Condition: Very good as professionally reconverted to flintlock configuration. The musket has a brown-gray mottled patina. The stock has been repaired at the wrist, otherwise very good with some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. Very few of these early production U.S. Springfield Model 1795's exist.
