This is a 1930 production pistol chambered in the very desirable Colt 38 Super cartridge with the very rare "T & W.A" markings. Introduced in 1929 the Colt Super .38 Semi-Automatic was marketed as a high performance alternative to the Colt .45 Government Model. The "T &W.A." markings are the earliest form of the better known "TWA" airlines Company. The TWA company was originally formed based on the suggestion of then Postmaster General Folger Brown, who was in the process of trying to issue new US Government Airmail contracts to companies to fly air mail routes on a coast to coast basis. (remember those Pre-Internet days?) His concern at that time was that both companies; the Transcontinental Air Transport (TAT) and the "Western Air Express" company could not handle the large volume of mail service so he suggested that both companies merge into one. So in July of 1930 the two companies merged to form the new T & W. A. or "Transcontinental & Western Airlines". Shortly after this merger, a new US Government contract was issued to the company, which began it's first deliveries on 25 October of 1930. With the ever increasing threat of mail robbery at this time, the ordering of these pistols with these exact markings of "T & W. A." would have corresponded exactly to the time frame of the manufacture and delivery of this exact pistol. This pistol is also accompanied by a Colt factory letter dated June 2009, which verifies these exact markings as being original and the pistol as one of a "42" gun shipment sent to the Smith Brothers Hardware Store in Columbus Ohio in November 1930. As noted the left side of the frame is correctly marked "T & W. A. No. 33". The left side of the slide is roll-stamped with the two line, one-block Hartford address and 1907-1913 patent dates. While the right side is roll-stamped with "COLT SUPER .38/AUTOMATIC" followed by the Rampant Colt trademark. An "S" production order mark is stamped on the top of the frame to the right of the disconnector hole. The rear face of the slide is stamped with the serial number, "9873" underneath the firing pin stop. The pistol is fitted with an early unmarked Colt 38 Super barrel, along with the checkered slide stop, thumb safety and wide spur checkered hammer and main spring housing. The magazine floor plate is correctly stamped "COLT SUPER/38 AUTO".
BBL: 5 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 38 Colt super
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut checkered
Serial Number: 9873
Condition: Fine as period refinished with most of the blue remaining on the pistol overall. The markings are clear and distinct, with nice sharp edges and flats not rounded off, with some minor light pin-prick type pitting showing in some areas under the blue finish. The walnut grips are in excellent condition with nice checkering on both sides, and are probably current replacements, but they are of the correct style for this pistol. Obviously these pistols saw heavy service use over the years, which would have accounted for the refinishing of the pistol. Still a very rare and very desirable early Colt contract pistol.
