Scarce Documented Winchester Model 1886 Extra Lightweight Rifle

Winchester Model 1886 extra lightweight rifle with Cody Firearms Museum Fax Document. The letter describes the rifle as "X-Light", and lists the features as: caliber .45/70 with round barrel, plain trigger, full length magazine, rubber shotgun buttplate. The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on October 24, 1900. The rifle has a blue lightweight barrel, full length magazine, forearm cap, frame, bolt and loading gate. The hammer and lever are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain oil-finished walnut. The stock has a black checkered hard rubber shotgun buttplate with the round Winchester logo in the center. The barrel has a Lyman "Hunting Front" sight with ivory bead and a scarce Winchester Express rear sight with three folding leaves and platinum sighting lines. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "MANUFACTURED BY THE/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "NICKEL STEEL" is stamped on the left side of the barrel behind the rear sight. The caliber designation "45-70" is stamped on the top of the barrel in front of the receiver. The upper tang is roll-stamped "-MODEL 1886.-". The lower tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates behind the trigger and the serial number, "122772" in script numerals behind the tang screw.

Excellent. The rifle retains 90% of the original blue finish. Nearly all of the finish is present on the barrel, magazine and forearm cap. The blue finish on the frame is thin on the bottom and has edge wear on contact points on the top and sides. The loading gate has 70% of the blue finish intact; the bolt retains virtually all of the original blue. Most of the case colors are present on the hammer and the sides of the loading lever. The case colors on the bottom of the lever have a silver patina. The straight grain American walnut stock and forearm are excellent and retain nearly all of the original oil finish. Wear is limited to a few very minor handling marks and two minor chips on the bottom of the stock near the buttplate. The black hard rubber shotgun buttplate is excellent with a few minor scratches. This is an excellent example of a scarce Winchester Model 1886 extra lightweight rifle.
