This is a fine original example of a Colt Model 1851Navy revolver that was manufactured in 1857. This revolver was designed to accept the Colt Third Model attachable shoulder stock and has a special four-screw frame with two additional screws to serve as supporting lugs for the stock and milled cut-outs in the recoil shields to fit the pronged fore-end of the stock attachment. In addition to the frame modifications, the back strap has a shallow groove milled in the butt to accept the clamping bar on the stock fore-end. The revolver has a sling swivel attached to the trigger guard ahead of the bow and a dove tail mounted front sight with nickel-silver, half-moon blade. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "-ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY-". "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PANT NO". "ENGAGED 16 MAY 1843" is roll-stamped along the forward edge of the cylinder. The full serial number, "74661" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and on the side of the cylinder. The partial serial number, "4661" is stamped on the loading lever. All of the visible serial numbers match.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 36 percussion
Finish: blue/case hardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 74661
Condition: Fine. The revolver retains 25% of the original blue and 40% case hardened finish in protected areas; the balance is a silver-gray patina. There is scattered light pitting on the barrel and cylinder and numerous small dents on the right side of the barrel lug below the wedge slot. The cylinder retains most of the roll-engraved scene and markings and has light-moderate pitting. The hammer and loading lever have 30% of the case hardened finish with strong case colors. The trigger guard and back strap retain about 40% of the silver plated finish. The one-piece walnut grip is in fine condition and retains 70% of the original varnish finish. The upper portion of the grip has finish wear and light scratches from contact with the attachable stock forearm. The markings on the barrel and frame are clear. This is an attractive example of a scarce and highly desirable Colt Third Model 1851 Navy revolver with four-screw frame cut for stock.
