A view of over 65 men, women, and children posing in front of the Soldiers' Home in Sawtelle, California. The photograph measures 8 x 6" with a beige border, mounted on 10 1/2 x 8 1/2" black cardstock with tan patterned trim around the photograph. Contrast is high and focus is good to sharp. Several worn areas are noted on the cardstock, particularly at the corners, otherwise very fine. Written in white in bottom left corner is "3015," likely the print number. Typed in blue on the reverse of the photograph is the heading "BALLOON ROUTE EXCURSION Los Angeles The Finest $1.00 Trolley Trip in the World Over the Scenic Lines of the Los Angeles-Pacific Co." A 16 line poem is typed below the heading, bordered in blue. "Photograph of Balloon Route Excursion Party Taken At Soldiers' Home, Sawtelle, Cal. Duplicates furnished by C. E. McCarthy, Excursion Photographer, 429 So. Hill ST., Los Angeles, Cal. Order by Number on Print" typed at bottom of reverse. At one time the Balloon Route Trolley Trip was one of the most famous trolley trips in the west. Made successful in part due to the efforts of C.M. Pierce (who states that a relative of his wrote the poem on the reverse of the photo), the trip initially used Los Angeles Pacific car #400 to tour the city, but quickly outgrew the use of a single car. Trips typically left from the Hill Street Station and went to Hollywood, the Old Soldiers' Home, Santa Monica, Playa del Rey Redondo Beach, and Venice. Also included are articles on the history of Playa del Rey and the Los Angeles Pacific Balloon Excursion Route.
