Salt Lake,UT - c1890 - Firemen Pose Photograph :
The Fire Department poses on the streets of the Beehive State. Photograph measures 8”x6”, black single matte 12”xz10”, high to medium contrast—suffers from minor yellowing, and the focus is sharp. Store front signs are easily read, including Kentucky Liquor Co., Citizens Bank, The Hamilton, Hamilton Hall, and the Bee Hive Store. There is some wear on the corners of the matte and a white stain on the lower left corner. Photo in good condition, except for a couple minor scratches and a very small puncture on the middle lower left. It was not until October 1, 1883 that Salt Lake City acquired its first professional fire department. Until the establishment of the professional fire fighters the city relied on volunteers. But, when the fires of June 21, 1883 burned a portion of the city and threatened the Tabernacle, the city decided that there needed to be a professional department so as to keep pace with Salt Lake's growth. George Ottinger was the first professional chief.
