Showcased in this lot for auction is a truly excellent condition, 1st year production, Winchester Model 1892 lever-action rifle, chambered for .38-40 caliber. The Model 1892 was the replacement for the Model 1873, and was basically a scaled down version of the powerful Big Model 1886. The 1892 Winchester was Jonathon Browning's answer to an updated repeating lever-action rifle built to handle shorter cartridges. This example though utilizes one of the larger rounds offered, chambered for .38-40, introduced in the 1880's by Winchester, and later adapted for Colt Revolvers, and still remains popular today. In addition to the powerful cartridge, the rifle utilizes a 24" round barrel, and a rear tang sight, paired with a Lyman blade front sight, and fitted with a correct dovetail filler rear sight. Overall, this 126 year old rifle shows immaculate condition, with fantastic blueing to the barrel and steel crescent butt-stock plate, very-good case hardening on the left side of the receiver, lever, and hammer, with some fade to the opposite side, nearly perfect screw heads, and absolutely gorgeous walnut fixtures, with tight wood to metal contact. Aside from the fantastic aesthetic condition of the firearm, the rifle also boasts a bright bore, with strong rifling, and a tight action, with strong springs. This antique rifle is almost one-of-a-kind, as most first year production examples saw heavy frontier usage, and when found today are in heavily used, and often abused condition. This rifle is by-far worthy of the finest Winchester, or Western Frontier firearms collections! The rifle qualifies as an Antique Long Gun, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check. Serial Number: 21107.
