Russian Model T T–33 Tokarev semi-automatic pistol in .30 caliber showing enamel emblem inlaid into the left grip from 46th Russian Taman Guards Division known as “The Night Witches”. The Night Witches were female aviators and this unit was the most decorated female unit in the Soviet service during World War II. The Night Witches flew canvas and wood biplanes armed with six bombs and could only reach speeds of under 100 miles an hour. These brave and ingenious women devised tactics to evade German night fighters and anti-aircraft. This unit was extremely successful and each pilot who survived at the end of the war had flown over 800 missions and 23 were awarded the title of “Hero of the Soviet Union” with 30 of its membersdying in combat. This pistol is accompanied by a letter on headquarters stationary 102 D infantry division, Office of the Commanding General, Addressed to Mr. Bob Hope at USO camp shows where the Commander states, “Dear Bob : I am sendingunder separate cover a pistol presented to me by the Commander of the 46th Russian Guards Division in appreciation of the superb entertainment you and your troupe gave the Ozarks yesterday in Passau, Germany.
