Roman Gold Solidus, Constantius II, 347 AD, NGC Ch. AU (65163)
Roman Gold Solidus, Constantius II, 337-361 AD, NGC Ch. AU. An absolutely gorgeous example of this scarce issue. It grades higher, technically, but NGC kept this one out of a Mint State holder due to very light graffiti in the left obverse field, which is noticeable only with magnification. Issued around 347 A.D., the obverse features Emperor Constantius II facing right, with the legend, FL[avivs] IVL[ivs] CONSTANTIVS PERP[etvvs] AVG[vstvs], meaning "Flavius Julius Constantius, Eternal Augustus." The reverse depicts Roma and Constantinopolis, helmeted and enthroned. The center legend translates to "20 years of vows, to 30 years more," and "Glory to the Republic" at the periphery. Struck at the Antioch Mint (SMANB in exergue). The example offered here weights 4.43 grams of pure gold. NGC graded the coin Choice AU overall, with a strike rank of 5 out of 5, and the surface quality a 2 out of 5 due to the light graffiti in the left field. In this grade range, this issue brings for over $2,000, although they rarely are offered for sale.
