Rare and unique Nathan Starr improvement to Hall rifle, patent or prototype model and only specimen known. Approx. .69 caliber smoothbore, 29” barrel, with triangular bayonet mounted beneath barrel, sheet metalblued stocks with compartment for paper cartridges in butt. The gun is in near fine condition showing bright finish, some minor rust and erosion, and just beginning surface-type rust, but shows colors onhammer, crisp metal surfaces and no use whatsoever, just darkening from storage and absolutely no cleaning. The forend and buttstock show a blued finish of which most remains. Refer: Nathan Starr, U.S. Sword andArms maker by Maj. James Hicks, page 158, where the patent papers are pictured and a notation states that it is interesting that it was four years before Simeon North suggested his improvement to the ordinancedepartment. A museum quality rarity that most sophisticated martial collectors could not even identify. Est: $7,500 - $15,000+++
