Rare Mauser Model 1896 Large Ring Hammer Carbine
Mauser Model 1896 Carbine with large ring hammer. The carbine has a 14 1/2 inch barrel measured from the chamber to the muzzle. The barrel is fitted with a ramp front sight. The sight has a drift-adjustable blade with nickel-silver bead. The tangent rear sight is marked from 50-500 meters. The magazine has a special extended bottom plate that covers the dovetail where the forearm mounts to the bottom of the frame. The barrel and receiver have a rust blue finish. The bolt is bright. The large ring hammer and lock frame have a casehardened finish. The extractor, rear sight slide, bolt stop, safety lever, trigger and stock mounting attachment are niter blue. The stock and forearm are European walnut with a varnish finish. The stock has a black, checkered hard rubber buttplate embossed with a small Mauser monogram. The top of the chamber is roll-stamped: "WAFFENFABRIK/MAUSER/OBERNDORF A/N" in three lines. The right side of the frame is roll-stamped: "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER/OBERNDORF A NECKAR" in two lines between the frame panels. The serial number "582" is stamped on the left side of the chamber, the lower left side of the frame, the rear face of the bolt, the top of the bolt stop, the back of the hammer, the back of the lock frame and the left side of the stock attachment mount. All of the visible serial numbers match. The top of the bolt is stamped with a "Double Crown/U" proof mark. Mauser Model 1896 Carbines were produced in very limited numbers; examples are rare.
