Rare Hammond's Patent Breech Loading Trial Carbine
A truly unique, Hammond's patent breech loading carbine. One may recognize the action as Hammond also made a 44RF caliber pistol called the Bulldog. The carbine has a 20-inch round, smoothbore, bright-finished, barrel with folding rear sight. The carbine brass receiver, trigger guard and hammer. The brass breechblock has a oval checkered latch at the top which allows the breechblock to swivel to the left and exposes the chamber. A steel ejector is mounted on the left side of the breech. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut with bright, steel barrel band, buttplate and band spring. The carbine has no visible markings.

Condition: Very fine. The steel barrel, barrel band and buttplate have the original bright finish with an attractive patina. There is some light rust on the buttplate. The brass receiver, breechblock, hammer and trigger guard have a mellow mustard yellow patina. Mechanically functions but hammer spring is weak. The stock and forearm are also in very fine overall condition with light handling marks. This is a totally original example of an extremely rare Civil War era breech loading carbine.
