Winchester Model 1873 Rifle with nickel-plated finish and special order 22-inch barrel. The rifle is accompanied by a letter from the Cody Firearms Museum that describes it as: "Rifle, Barrel Length: 22 inches, Barrel Shape: Round, Plain trigger" and "Nickel Trim". The letter states that the rifle was shipped form the Winchester warehouse on August 7, 1882. The round barrel and full length magazine are blued. The hammer and loading lever have a case hardened finish. The loading gate is blued. The receiver, dust cover, forearm cap and crescent buttplate are nickel-plated. The stock and forearm are straight grain black walnut with a varnish finish. The barrel has a standard dove-tail mounted front sight with nickel-silver blade and a sporting style rear sight. The third style receiver has an integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The stock has a crescent steel buttplate with sliding brass trapdoor. The barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The top of the receiver tang is roll-stamped with "-MODEL 1873-" in fancy letters with foliate designs at either end. The serial number: "97001A" is stamped in script letters on the lower tang. The script initials "CN" are engraved on the bottom of the cartridge elevator and the elevator has been nickel-plated. The engraving is contemporary to the rifle but is not factory work.
