Winchester Model 1886 Carbine with Winchester Arms Museum factory letter. The letter describes Winchester Model 1866, serial number, 120684 as a carbine, caliber 50/100/450 with special order "rifle butt" and states that it was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on January 18, 1900. The carbine has a standard configuration round barrel and full-length magazine with two barrel bands. The receiver has the very desirable color casehardened finish with casehardened hammer, lever and buttplate, The barrel and magazine have a blue finish. The barrel is fitted with a steel front sight blade mounted on a block in front of the upper barrel band and adjustable leaf carbine rear sight. A saddle ring is mounted on the left side of the receiver. The stock is fitted with a crescent steel rifle buttplate. The stock and forearm are walnut with a varnish finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "- MANUFACTURED BY THE- / - WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. -" between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. The caliber designation: "50-100/450" is stamped in two lines between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "- MODEL 1886 -" and the lower tang is marked with the two line 1884/1885 patent dates behind the trigger and the serial number "120684" between the tang screws. The non-factory letters "PEB" are hand stamped on the underside of the receiver; the significance of this marking is unknown. Model 1886 Carbines are seldom encountered with any special order features. The combination of a special order rifle buttplate on a carbine chambered for the scarce and very desirable .50 Express cartridge is extremely rare.
