This is an example of a combination military pommel holsters for a Model 1855 Pistol Carbine and a Colt Dragoon revolver. A nearly identical combination holster is pictured on page 16 of "Packing Iron Gunleather of The Frontier West" by Richard C. Rattenbury. These holsters were manufactured circa 1855 in limited quantities for issue to selected companies of the 1st and 2nd Dragoons and armed with the Model 1555 Pistol Carbine and Colt Dragoon Revolvers. The holster is constructed of black bridle leather and has compartments for a Colt revolver on the left side and a Model 1855 Pistol-Carbine with detached stock on the right side. The holsters have a detachable leather cover attached by leather thongs.

Condition: Good. The revolver holster has smooth leather with minor age cracking on the body. The holster strap has some heavy age cracking and some flaking with oxidation on the buckle. All stitching is tight. The Pistol-Carbine holster shows heavier age cracking and some heavy wear on one edge. The toe plug is detached but remains with the holster and some of the stitching has separated. The cover flap is about fair showing some separated stitching, loss of the leather trim and the rawhide straps that secure it to the pommel have greatly deteriorated.
