This is an outstanding, archival grade photograph collection showcasing the personal life of American film actor Clark Gable. Appearing in more the 65 films, Clark Gable established himself as an American icon by portraying Rhett Butler in the 1939 Civil War epic film Gone with the Wind and was the lead actor in three films that won the Academy Award for Best Picture between 1934 and 1939. During WWII, Gable made recruiting films (including Combat America) in combat with the Eighth Air Force to recruit aerial gunners and participated in five combat missions. He received the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his efforts. After the war, he returned to his acting career until his death in 1960. This collection pertains to Clark Gable's film career, World War II USAAF service, and family life. There are approximately 130 mostly black and white photographs and include interior shots of the Gable home, fishing and hunting trips, posed photographs depicting home life and social life (several with his fifth wife Kay Spreckels and step-children), and a few candid family photographs. Of special note there is a scanned WWII photograph of Gable wearing flight gear from his return to England after a mission to Germany, and a studio released still of Gable with Marilyn Monroe (the pair starred in the 1961 film The Misfits, which was the last film for both stars). There are also approximately 20 colored Gable family photographs that appear to have been taken in the years after Clark Gable's death in 1960 and numerous Gable family negatives mostly from the early 1960s (several appear to have be taken around time of John Gable's birth), making for a very personal glimpse into the life of the Gable family. There is a 4 7/8" x 6 7/8" negative of Clark Gable as a child. From his days with the USAAF, there is a framed photograph of Clark Gable and other airmen standing next to a Stearman biplane. One of the others is the famous actor Wallace Beery. The wood frame measures 16 1/2" x 14 1/2". An interesting and personal collection from a major American film star.
