Rare Civil War First Model Lindner Breech-Loading Carbine
This exceedingly rare example of a Lindner beech-loading carbine was manufactured by Edward Lindner at the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company Armory in Manchester, New Hampshire circa 1861-1862. Lindner produced 501 First Model carbines that were issued to the 1st Michigan Cavalry and 8th West Virginia Mounted Infantry. The carbine is finished 'National Armory Bright" and has a oil-finished walnut stock. The top of the breechblock is stamped: "EDWARD LINDNER'S / PATENT. / MARCH 29, 1859" in three lines. The carbine has a sling ring on the left stock flat, a folding two-leaf rear sight on the receiver tang and a rotating collar device that turns 180 degrees to the left to release the breechblock. The left stock flat is stamped with the inspector's initials "G.K.J." in small block letters. The initials "W H" are carved in the right side of the stock near the butt.
