You have the chance to bid on a Exceptional and RARE Spencer/Springfield .50 Caliber Lever Action Repeating Rifle. The U. S. Springfield Armory only made 1108 of these long .50 caliber repeating rifles with 32 ½” barrels intended for infantry use by changing the Spencer carbine barrel and forend for a longer barrel and full length wood forend secured by two barrel bands and fitted with a cleaning rod. All of this model were made on the Spencer/Burnside marked Model 1865 receivers. This example shows these correct markings on the receiver top. The alteration work was done by the Springfield Armory in 1871 and issued to troops during the early days of the Indian Wars. Because of the limited number made by Springfield, few have survived to the present. This is a fine example that still correctly retains the original Spencer carbine stock with sling ring plate, correct Springfield rear sight and Stabler magazine cut-off switch ahead of the trigger (when utilized, this unusual and interesting device allowed the shooter to hold the cartridges in the magazine in reserve, yet allow for single loading and firing of the rifle), correct magazine in the butt stock. Butt plate still retains much of the original case color finish as does the more protected areas of the hammer. Excellent bright bore and all metal surfaces are uncleaned and show a lovely deep naturally aged patina, excellent markings and mechanics, cleaning rod intact, especially superb matching walnut butt stock and forend. The overall appearance of this desirable and extremely rare Indian Wars Spencer repeating rifle is superior in every way. This is a antique firearm. NO FFL transfer or NICS background check required. The serial number is 31867.
