RARE AND OUTRAGEOUS LITHO PAPER ADV FOR HAISHS BARBED STEEL FENCE WIRE. Dated 1881, this fabulous and extremely rare old lithography for barbed wire fence depicts a red-jacketed and hatted, pipe-smoking rider astride a huge rooster with barbed-wire feet. Various vignettes depict ships and locomotives delivering wire, buffalo, someone mending the fence, wagon trains, etc. Much text including a balloon from the rider reading, "AINT I A DAISY, THE COCK OF THE WALK, JUST NOTICE MY SPURS ON BOTH WIRES WALK. JUST MEASURE MY GAIT, A 16 STRIDE. IM THE S. BARBED ROOSTER, THE FARMERS PRIDE." Jacob Haish (1826-1926) was one of the earliest manufacturers of barbed wire and patented a special shaped barbed wire. This is the only advertisement we have ever handled for barbed wire. SIZE: 20" w x 21" h. CONDITION: Was at one time glued to a surface, now creased with various losses along the edge border. Also a tear below the left roosters leg with a teeny piece of paper loss. Overall surface discolored. Now shrink-wrapped on foam core. 1-5938
