Offered for your bidding pleasure is a Rare Unaltered Pre-Custer Battle First Model 1873 Trapdoor Springfield .45-70 Caliber. All of the First Model 1873 rifles and carbines in service were recalled and updated with new parts by the Arsenal in the late 1870s. This example was probably lost in battle or stolen before the recall as it retains the early style “long wrist/short comb” stock used only on First Model Springfields before the new “short wrist/long comb” came into use in 1877. It also retains the early “high arch” breech block with “Model 1873” over “Eagle head and U.S.” markings- again used only on First Models. Retains the coarse knurled First Model hammer with early 1873 dated lock plate and First Model rear sight with correct “slotless screws.” Still shows the “Circle P” proof mark in the wood behind the trigger guard and a very faint ESA in oval cartouche in the left side of the stock opposite the lock plate. The butt stock has the classic Plains Indian seven-brass tack cross design with the left side sowing five brass tacks in a straight line. There is deep staining around the tacks and there should be no question as to their age. The stock has a worn and aged look with all metal parts a very deep and dark uncleaned patina. Sides of the forend worn thin against the barrel, front sight and swivels intact, fine mechanics. Wonderful example of an unaltered Pre-Custer Battle (June 25, 1876) Springfield with the enhancement of being Indian owned and used. Few unaltered First Model rifles escaped the recalls and remain in their unaltered original condition today. This rifle was manufactured in 1875. Antique firearm. NO FFL transfer or NICS background check required. The serial number is 53993.
