John Henry Amshewitz 1882-1942: Studied at the RA Schools 1902-1907 under John Singer Sargent and Simeon Solomon. He was a friend of Frank Brangwyn, who influenced his work. He won a competition to do the frescoes for Liverpool City Hall in 1907. He exhibited at the RA (16), 1905- 1933,and SBA, NEAC, RP Elected RBA 1914. Worked in South Africa 1916-22, where he was based at Johannesburg and painted many portraits. Produced caricatures for the Johannesburg Sunday Times and Rand Daily Mail. Worked in England 1922-36, before returning to South Africa. Died Muizenberg 6 December 1942. On 16 September 1943 Lord Harlech opened a large commemorative exhibition of his works in Johannesburg City Hall. Represented: NPG London; VAM; Ferens AG, Hull; Brighton AG; South Africa NG, Cape Town; The Africana Museum, Johannesburg; Pretoria AG; Durban AG; Rhodes University.
