No. 449, issued for the year 1885 to T.C. Power, president of the Fort Benton Transportation Company. Power was a Montana Indian and military trader who went on to serve as a U.S. Senator for Montana. Printed signature of manager Coyle. Not signed by Power. Printed on tan cardstock with an ornate logo and border. Some minor wear. Organized in 1844 by Maine businessman to provide nightboat service between Boston and Portland, Maine. The paddle-ship Portland, owned by the company, sank in a blizzard in 1889. There were no survivors and likely over 100 deaths (the passenger list went down with the ship). Modern estimates place the death toll over 200. {See: https://archive.hnsa.org/conf2004/papers/marx.htm for a nice history of the company] Date: Location: Portland, Maine HWAC# 63045
