Before turning to sculpture, Martha Pettigrew was a scientific illustrator for the Nebraska State Museum. These illustrations sparked an interest in the American Southwest—and in sculpture. Pettigrew trained with Fritz White but her work is also inspired by Francisco Zuniga, Henry Moore, and others. Of her interest in Native American subjects, Pettigrew has said, “Women are the cultural bearer of all societies, and their everyday tasks have become an endless source of inspiration for my work.” Northern Exposure, on the other hand, depicts the “ecology of the beaver pond:” beaver dams stream, pond attracts frog and fish, fish and frog attract bear, bear scraps attract raven.”
