Acrylic on board, featuring still life of flowers in basket. Signed and attr. Paul Longenerker (American, 1920 - 2008) on bottom left corner. 9.9 x 12.75 inch (25.2 x 32.4 cm). Longenecker was born in 1920, and grew up in Rockville Centre, Long Island, where from his earliest childhood he was intrigued with drawing. His grandmother, a landscape and china painter, gave him his first instruction in oil at age 12. He graduated from high school in Rockville Centre, attended the National Academy in New York City before dropping out and taking classes at the Art Students League. Longenecker’s signature landscapes of Upper Main Street, Nantucket Harbor and Brant Point defined the island for decades. He had no interest in abstract art, preferring to capture Nantucket’s magical light and depict the island in all its seasonal beauty. “His work was quintessential Nantucket. The brightness and light were incredible. His precision was amazing,” said Marian Varian, the owner of European Traditions on Straight Wharf, where Longenecker showed his paintings for the past several years. “One of the last portraits he did was of my mother. I am so glad I have it."
