Pair of percussion derringers, in fine to excellent original condition, approx. 6” overall with 2-1/2” barrels of approx. .45 caliber rifled, along with a silver butter dish by Tiffany & Co., all three itemsengraved with fancy crest of Milton S. Latham, California Governor, Congressman and U.S. Senator, who filled the senatorial seat of David Broderick who was killed in the infamous duel with Judge Terry. Latham was aSan Francisco socialite with a great fortune and his mansion was one of the finest in San Francisco. He was known as a cultivator of the arts and a collector. A copy of a letter is included from Margaret Zeff documentingthe provenance of this ensemble which she inherited from her mother, Mary Godley, who was Mrs. Latham’s half-sister. Also included is a letter from prominent Antique Roadshow appraiser and dealer documenting hisobtaining this set from Mrs. Zeff. The derringers are American copies of Henry Deringers and show beautifully striped and browned barrels which remain in fine condition showing 80%-90% of their striping
