Outstanding U.S. Springfield Model 1842 Percussion Musket with Bayonet
Manufactured from 1844 to 1855 Marked 1853 on barrel tang with the eagle shield over "US" in front of the hammer and "SPRING / FIELD / 1853" behind the hammer. The left side rear of the barrel is marked with the "V / P / eagle head" proofmarks and the left flat is marked with a small "T". Left side of stock has a "J.L" stamped cartouche. Fixed front blade sight mounted on the front barrel band, no rear sight (correct), bayonet lug mounted on the underside of the barrel, sling swivel on the middle barrel band and on the front of the trigger guard, and iron ram rod with a trumpet head. Three barrel bands with a sling swivel on the center band and steel buttplate marked "US" on the tang. Complete with "U.S." marked socket bayonet.

Condition: Excellent plus. The unissued musket retains nearly all of the crisp original arsenal bright finish with some scattered small areas of discoloration. The stock is excellent plus with a few minor gouges on the underside ahead of the trigger guard, a few moderate dents just ahead of the middle barrel band, on both sides, and a few minor dings. The stock flats, edges and cartouche are sharp. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. The bayonet is excellent with 98% original bright finish with some discoloration from dried oil and some mottling. One cannot improve upon this one. If a collector desired one example for their collection, this is it!
