"Union Carbine" manufactured by Gwyn & Campbell of Hamilton, Ohio, between 1863 and 1864. This is one of the 4000, Type II, Gwyn & Campbell carbines. It has the pivot-type lever latch, flat hammer with beveled edge, short lever, and short base rear sight. A sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the receiver. The part round-part octagon barrel, breechblock and upper receiver tang are blued. The receiver, hammer, lever, lower tang and buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The stock is black walnut with an oil finish. The lock plate is marked: "GWYN & CAMPBELL" over "PATENT/1862/HAMILTON.O." in three lines. "UNION/RIFLE" is stamped vertically on the left front edge of the receiver. The serial number, "4077" is stamped on the bottom of the receiver and the barrel is stamped with an assembly number "3847". Single letter Ordnance inspection marks are stamped on most components. The Ordnance Department final inspection mark which consists of the script initials "WHR" in a rectangle is stamped on the left side of the stock wrist. A small "WHR" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the stock comb just ahead of the buttplate. Gwyn & Campbell manufactured approximately 8200 breech loading carbines in 1863 and 1864. These carbines were issued to a number of Federal cavalry regiments in the Army of the Cumberland and the Army of Tennessee.
BBL: 20 inch part octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 52
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 4077
Condition: Excellent. The carbine is un-fired and retains at least 95% of the original blue and casehardened finish. The barrel has all of the military blue finish and the bore is bright. The receiver, hammer, lock plate and lever have vivid case colors. The niter blue finish on the breechblock and upper tang show some minor storage and handling wear. The walnut stock is in excellent condition with only very minor handling marks. The lock plate markings are sharp and the Ordnance inspection mark on the stock wrist is crisp. This is an excellent example of a Gwyn & Campbell Type II "Union Carbine" that would be very difficult to improve upon.
