Outland/ Aliens Spacesuit/Helmet/Oxygen Pack Costume
Writer-director, Peter Hyams, described his acclaimed cult classic "Outland" (1981), as "High Noon in space", with Sean Connery in the Gary Cooper role. The location for the action is Io, Jupiter’s moon which is being mined for titanium. Connery who, like Cooper, plays the mines Federal Marshall, discovers a horrific conspiracy in which the mining executives are secretly giving an amphetamine-type drug to the miners so that they can work longer hours. It works great, until suddenly miners are having lethal hallucinations. Also like Cooper, Connery gets no help from anyone else at the mines and must confront the powerful company's cover-up all alone. This is one of the original mining pressure suits. It was designed by the legendary John Mollo, (Star Wars and Alien). The costume comes with the full yellow suit, helmet, and oxygen backpack. Looking closely at the helmet you can see a very strong resemblance between it, and the iconic helmets used throughout "Alien". It has the face plate boarding LED's and outside side lights, and the detail work looks very much like the Alien helmet. Perhaps he used the same design. There are connecting hoses that go from the helmet to the suit, along with the air-hose connecting the backpack to the suit. As an extra bonus, this suit was given to visual effects wizard Robert Skotak (who may have worked unaccredited on "Outland"). When Skotak worked on "Aliens", Director James Cameron had a limited budget, so Skotak used this same yellow suit (without the highly recognizable helmet), for the opening of "Aliens", where the rescue squad find Ripley and her cat in the escape pod. There is a character name “Cummins” written on a label of the suit, however several other suits in "Outland", (both the yellow and blue versions also have the same name. The helmet also has a practical fan built into the back to bring in air for the actor. A great display collectable, and a chance to own a suit designed by the master, John Mollo!
