This is an excellent Osage Native American Indian War Shirt dating to circa 1890. The war shirt features a wonderful rich red and black trade silk clothe with geometric pattern color adornment having early trade ribbons and Indian tanned hide fringe being accented by original early solid brass trade bells. The center of the chest features two trade clothe and black silk hand cutouts known as representations of the Osage and other Prairie tribes as their slain enemies or more appropriately the hands of God’s power (hand of Wakondah’s power). At the center of each hand shows two matching Ermine hide drops with green trade ribbon accents. The Warrior or Medicine Man shirt shows overall good condition for its early authentic age with some signs of use and wear having some fabric loss on the black silk areas. This is truly a unique and unusual representation of an Osage War Shirt and is possibly the only shirt of its kind. Provenance: Purchased and curated by the Historical Native American Indian artifact and weapons private museum collection in Paris, France. The piece was purchased many years ago from the Historic and large private museum collection in Missouri, the same collection as the Northern Plains Wolf Scout Cap circa 1800-1850 that was sold for $4,165 at the North American Auction Co. 1/16/16 auction along with the same collection as the Kiowa Buffalo Hair Wrapped Coup Staff circa 1850 in the North American Auction Co. 1/14/2017 auction for $2,091 (both with premiums). (Originally purchased from the Missouri Museum collection for $1,200). The shirt measures 67 3/8" from the tips of each sleeve, 34 3/4" long from the bottom of the waist to the top of the neck line, and 26" wide from each armpit.
