Original reward poster for Tommy Brown stage robber with applied photographs in each corner. Copy tells of this notorious stage robber escaping state prison. Gives his physical description, issued June 15th 1886.The poster itself was folded and used as an envelope. The reverse is address to the Sheriff of Merced, CA and is postage stamped Sacramento, June 21st and 22nd, 1886. Tom or Tommy Brown was a notorious highwayman whohijacked many stagecoaches and escaped jails several times. He was bold and aggressive and hijacked and robbed a stage less than an hour after an escape. He was resourceful and put Cayenne Pepper in his shoes to foil theblood-hounds on his trail. It is California Legend that he killed a rancher from Redding, CA during a robbery and by legend, the rancher’s three sons tracked bold Tommy Brown down and ended his career with ‘frontierjustice’ after which Brown was never seen around. Brown is mentioned in Great Stagecoach Robbers of the West by Eugene Block and is known to Western historians. From the Robert Hoelscher Collection. Est:
