This is an original Great White Way highway sign from Montana. The Great White Way was a short lived Auto Trail that connected Yellowstone National Park to Glacier National Park in the 1920's. By the mid 1920's, most of the states were receiving federal funding for highways and a numerical system was beginning to be used to standardize the highway system. Many Auto Trails were becoming obsolete or renamed under this newly adopted system. This sign shows an arrow in the center with "Y" and "G" at either end. The circle that encompasses the arrow reads "Great White Way". The sign is additionally marked with two embossed "R" - The signs would indicate "R" or "L", as to which direction to stay for either Yellowstone or Glacier Parks. Though considered an auto sign it also has direct ties to the Great Northern routes in Montana to Glacier and Yellowstone - The Great Northern adopted the use of the signs in the early days, when the highways failed to help point the way to the Great Northern rail depot station. This is a RARE and desirable Montana highway sign. The sign shows fair condition with heavy rust and damage as shown. The sign measures 10" x 14".
