Gerald "Gerry" Patrick McCann was born in Queens, New York.McCann graduated from high school in 1934 and moved on to attend Pratt Institute of Brooklyn, studying under Monte Crews, Nick Riley, John Fleming Gould and H. Winfield. McCann switched areas of focuses between art and engineering. In 1939, for pulp magazines, McCann began drawing pen and ink story illustrations. His work appeared in Ace Sports, Thrilling Sports, Sports Story, Western Story and Wild West Weekly. "" Three months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, McCann enlisted in the Army. He attended basic training at Camp Upton in Yaphank, NY. Living on Long Island,. He studied with Harold Von Schmidt and heard lectures by Harvey Dunn when he continued his training at the Art Students League of New York. McCann joined the art community surrounding Harold Von Schmidt and the Famous Artists School in Westport, CT, where he taught courses in composition and landscape when he moved to Madison, Connecticut in 1959.
