The lot features a very rare pre-Indian Wars period pair of fully top beaded moccasins from the Oglala Lakota Sioux of South Dakota and dating to circa 1860-1870. The early authentic pair of beaded moccasins is made of Indian brain tanned buckskin with parfleche rawhide soles. The moccasins are stiff from drying and there are old native repairs in a few places as shown. The set shows excellent early traditional geometric beadwork featuring cross motifs on the top of the vamps. The beadwork is all glass trade seed beads in chalk white, red white hearts, semi-transparent medium green, blue, and light green. The set shows the appropriate signs of wear from age and use. Each measures 9.75”L by 3.25”W and the upper cuffs stand 4.5”H. These early examples exhibit attractive colors and styling and would be a wonderful addition to any American Indian beadwork collection.
