Impressive collection of material related to aviation pioneer Octave Chanute (1832–1910), a civil engineer who assisted many budding aviation enthusiasts, including the Wright Brothers. Includes:

A printed US Patent Office patent for a "Means for Aerial Flight" by Louis Pierre Mouillard of Cairo, assignor of one half to Octave Chanute, 12 pages, 7.75 x 11.5, patented on May 18, 1897, with four pages of diagrams of the flying machine (first diagram page detached).

Three small original vintage 2.5 x 2 photographs of Herring and Avery gliding experiments on a Chanute glider, circa 1896–1897.

Two ALSs in French by Chanute, signed "O. Chanute," totaling three pages on two sheets, December 21, 1904, and February 28, 1905, both to Jacques Balsan, a French aviation pioneer who purchased a Chanute glider; includes a William Avery freight invoice to Balsan, dated February 23, 1905, for "crating Aeroplane." Balsan was a wealthy French industrialist who in 1921 married Consuelo Vanderbilt, Duchess of Marlborough; his Chanute glider remains on display at the Air and Space Museum, Le Bourget. A file of material related to Jacques Balsan is included, comprising: a postcard photo signed by Balsan; three autograph letters and one TLS; and two original vintage photographs by M. Rol.

A hardcover booklet entitled "Recent Progress in Aviation" by Octave Chanute, 22 pages, 6 x 9.5, published by the Smithsonian in 1911, with the bookplate of Audouin Dollfus affixed to the front pastedown. Plus a disbound "Experiments in Flying" article by Chanute removed from a magazine. In overall very good to fine condition.
