ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR ERA HUGE 21X28" FRAMED PHOTO-TAKEN IN 1864 & RESTORED & COLORED BY THE FAMILY. INCLUDED IS AN IRON INITIAL PUNCH FOR THE SOLDIER * INCREDIBLE ORIGINAL PHOTO THAT WAS RESTORED ON BEHALF OF FAMILY MEMBERS IN 1975 BY PAINTING OILS OVER THE BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPH. REVERSE OF FRAME CREDITS RESTORING ARTISTS. THE PHOTO SHOWS JOEL EUGENE PARMENTER IN SEPTEMBER OF 1864. PARMENTER WAS A CIVIL WAR PRIVATE - COMPANY G-184TH REGIMENT-NEW YORK INFANTRY-U.S. VOLUNTEERS-ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES. THERE IS A PLAQUE BELOW THE PORTRAIT ATTESTING SO. THE PORTRAIT SHOWS THE SOLDIER IN BLUE UNIFORM AND VEST WITH GOLD BUTTONS AND WATCH CHAIN.HE IS WEARING A WIDE BRIM BLUE HAT. HE MAINTAINS A DISTANT GAZE AND IS A HANDSOME YOUNG MAN WITH PIERCING EYES. THERE ARE A FEW AREAS OF PROFESSIONALLY RESTORED DAMAGE TO THE PIECE, THAT IS NOT DETRACTING. IT IS IN A WIDE WOOD FRAME WITH A GOLD INNER BORDER. THE SIZE OF THE VISIBLE PORTRAIT IS 15 1/2" X 22 1/2". TOTAL WITH FRAME 21X28". PORTRAIT ALSO COMES WITH THE SOLDIERS IRON INITIAL PUNCH "JEP" PROBABLY USED FOR PERSONALIZING LEATHER EQUIPMENT. INCLUDED ARE TWO ENVELOPES WITH 3 CENT STAMPS, POSTMARKED 1864 AND 1865. THE LARGER ENVELOPE CONTAINS A HAND-WRITTEN LETTER BY THE SOLDIER TO HOME, ASKING FOR CERTAIN ITEMS TO BE SENT TO HIM. THE ITEMS INCLUDE POTATOES, WHICH ARE HARD TO COME BY, TOBACCO, WHICH HE COULD SELL FOR A PROFIT, AND STAMPS SO HE CAN WRITE HOME AGAIN. AN INCREDIBLE PORTRAIT OF HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE.
