Navajo Weaving. 4'7" x 4'4" beautifully woven sand painting textile depicting Slayer of Alien Gods. The slayer stands in the center of a turquoise circle is surrounded by bows, arrows and eagles. Fairly uncommon. Circa 1970s. After a natural catastrophe, the Navajo Medicine invoked the spirit of the Slayer of Alien Gods to aid the people and put an end to the calamity. In this weaving, the slayer is covered with an armor of flint, lightning and thunder. Since he can control all of these elements, he can also produce calamities at his will. The club above his right hand produces earthquakes. The five lightning arrows in his left hand are used to perplex the clever minds of human beings, especially those who haven't yet gained control of their senses through prayer and meditation. The four lofty eagles each stand on a section of the Rainbow Guardian and assist the slayer. The bows, arrows and lightning guard and guarantee the beneficial purpose of these mystic and sacred symbols so that the alien power may not use them.
