For auction in this lot is a Navajo Native American Indian, third phase chiefs blanket. The piece is constructed with an impeccably tight weave, and is crafted of wool fibres. The rug shows design and coloring of a late 19th century third phase chiefs blanket, including; nine geometric diamonds, separated by striking horizontal bands. The rug utilizes natural mineral dyes, showing vibrant red, soft blue, deep black, and speckled gray. The chiefs blankets received their name due to the fact that they were prized by wealthy members of the Indian tribes, and wealthy white men alike. Joe Ben Wheat was once quoted "The Chiefs blanket is one of the finest achievements in Navajo Weaving", this blanket is no acception. The early Navajo piece shows very good condition, with little to no apparent color bleeding, and a tight weave. The blanket measures 46 7/8" x 46".
