Offered for your consideration is this Navajo Coil Wedding Basket from circa. 1930. According to the Navajo Crafts website, the design of the Navajo Wedding or Ceremonial Basket is meant to represent a map of life. Starting in the center of the coil basket is birth, where the coils are all white. Travelling outward on the coils, some black is encountered; black represents adversity, Continuing outward, the red coils are encountered. The red is solid--no black is encountered. Red represents marriage and the mixing of your blood with your spouse. Continuing on, outside the red, more black is encountered. The darkness here is interspersed with the light (white) which signifies enlightenment, which grows until the last all white band. Finally, the line in the center serves as a reminder that there is always a pathway to the light. The basket is in good condition for its age: the colors on the inside of the basket are somewhat faded in comparison to the color on the outside; the weave is tight. The basket measures 11.5" in diameter
