"The two sojourners met while boarding the Marrakech Express train in Casablanca. Both were on their separate ways heading to Marrakech to peddle their art at the Central Souk (market). Michael's suitcase bulging with teapots, and Harvey's luggage brimming with basket illusions, they arrive in Marrakech. Sharing a taxi to Central Souk, they arrive at midday. Pandemonium is everywhere. The air is rife with cries of gypsies, snake-charmers, wandering minstrels, magicians, and folk-singers. There are tanneries on pavements, street artists on every corner, and vegetable vendors popping out of alleys. If you’re not paying attention, you could end up with a monkey on your shoulder or snake wrapped around your arm.
Seeking a quiet reprieve they happen upon Café Littéraire: Dar Cherifa, a tea room on the fringes of the souk. They enter a dimly lit room and sit at a small table where they meet their waitress/belly dancer, Aziza. She sets down a pot of traditional mint tea and begins her dance. To the clatter of her zils, they sip their tea and admire her graceful swaying movements. The teapot is mystical, they've never seen anything like it, but Aziza diverts their attention as her eyes peek over the top of her veil. Under the cloak of darkness, thieves steal their luggage."
