Mexico, ca. 19th century. Oil on metal. The subtle rendering of skin tones demonstrate the mastery of this unidentified, regional painter who, inappropriately and unfortunately, is labeled "anonymous Mexican School." Resulting from a serious lack of scholarship over 95% of Mexican tin retablo paintings are currently simply labeled anonymous but a growing interest in identifying these 19th century tin retablo painters has emerged. Apropos of: I own or know the whereabouts of over 12 signed retablos by as many different artists; this painter, incidentally, is among them. How handsomely is the skill and technique with which it's painted; in manner and style it's a junior echo of the mastery of Italian 15th century "Quatrocento." Note how interesting are the several layers of paint on the skull that give it an oddly realistic "appearance like fractured bone." Condition: considerable old damage and repaint, visible in photos but now completely stable. 14” x 10”.
