Mauser model 98 sniper rifle, 8mm caliber, manufactured by J. P. Sauer & Son, showing long-rail mounted scope with quick lever release. Serial #6458, dated 1943 on breech. Scope marked “Dialythan 4 Power” by BMJ Code, serial #75001, mount #814B. With 359 Nazi eagle proof. The gun remains in good to very good original condition showing 30-50% original blue evenly thinning and toning. The stock is also good with many small dings and mars consistent with military service and use. Good traces of inspection marks and large initial “H” on cheek piece of right butt. The barrel and action show punch-dots for special assembly or treatment. The action is good, the bore is very good. Refer: The German Sniper: 1914-1945 pages 245-268. The bolt is numbered 4352, all other external numbers 6458. In this cataloger’s experience, German sniper rifles were generally notmatched if issued as the snipers changed bolts and parts constantly and often had several different fitted bolts for each rifle because of weather conditions.
