Born Kilgraston, Perthshire 18 January 1803, fourth son of Francis Grant, the Laird of Ligraston and brother of Lieutenant General Sir J. Hope Grant. Educated at Harrow School. Originally intended for the bar, but began painting as an amateur, becoming professional from 1831. Spent some time in the studios of Edinburgh artists, among them Alexander Nasmyth, William Allan and John Watson Gordon. Elected ARA 1842, RA 1851, PRA and knighted 1866. Among his sitters were Count D'Orsay, Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, the Countess of Zetland, the Duke of Devonshire, Benjamin Disraeli MP, Palmerston, and Sir Edwin Landseer. His sitter's list 1828-78 is in NPG London. Died suddenly of heart diease at his residence in Melton Mowbray 5 October 1878. Studio sale held Christie's 28 March 1879.
